A bright, spacious, and versatile family home
Our clients in this very sought after part of Hitchin approached us with the goal of transforming their home into a more spacious and modern living environment. They wanted to create an open-plan space where family and friends could gather comfortably while maintaining a connection to the outdoors. The existing layout felt confined and disconnected, with a couple of small bedrooms upstairs and no ensuite bedroom. The underutilised conservatory at the rear of the house also limited the amount of natural light entering the home.
The Brief
The vision was clear: to design a double-storey extension that would provide a large, open-plan living area flooded with natural light. The clients wanted a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces, alongside a bespoke kitchen tailored to their needs. They also sought a versatile solution for creating separate yet connected living spaces, ensuring both openness and privacy. Upstairs, the goal was to create more spacious bedrooms, including a new ensuite, and introduce a separate study for additional flexibility.
The Solution
We delivered a thoughtful and elegant design, transforming the rear of the property with a spacious double-storey extension. Key features included:
- Expansive 6-panel bifold doors – These open up to the newly fitted patio, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and allowing natural light to pour in.
- Bespoke kitchen by Kitchen Ergonomics – Designed with both style and function in mind, the kitchen integrates beautifully into the overall aesthetic of the space.
- Internal Crittall-style bi-fold doors – These allow flexibility to separate the playroom from the main living space while maintaining an open, airy feel when desired.
- Underfloor heating – Fitted in the new open-plan living space to enhance comfort and warmth.
- New bathrooms – Stylishly designed to match the overall look and feel of the home, adding to the sense of cohesion and quality.
- Good-sized bedrooms and new ensuite – The upstairs layout was reimagined to create more spacious bedrooms, including a main bedroom with a new ensuite for extra convenience.
- Separate study – A dedicated study space was added to meet the clients’ needs for a quiet and functional work area.
The combination of thoughtful design and high-quality materials ensured that the new space would not only look beautiful but also function perfectly for everyday family life.
The Results
The final outcome exceeded expectations. The underutilised conservatory has been replaced with a bright and inviting space. The new open-plan living area, complete with a bespoke kitchen, dining, and living space, now flows effortlessly into the garden through the 6-panel bifold doors. The Crittall-style internal bi-fold doors add a stylish touch while offering flexibility between the playroom and living area. Upstairs, the new bedrooms are light and airy, providing a relaxing retreat for the whole family. The main bedroom benefits from a stylish new ensuite, and the addition of a separate study offers a quiet, dedicated workspace. The modern bathrooms and underfloor heating have further elevated the comfort and practicality of the home.
