Opening Up Family Living

Our clients came to us with a common challenge – a home that wasn’t quite working for their growing family. The existing layout felt tight and disconnected, particularly in the kitchen and dining areas. They wanted to open up the space, create better flow, and add a practical utility area, all without needing to move house.

The Vision

The goal was to design a single storey rear extension that would provide a large, open-plan kitchen, dining, and family area. The space needed to feel light, modern, and connected to the garden. The clients also wanted to include a separate utility room to keep laundry and storage out of the main living zones. Functionality, comfort, and a fresh, cohesive design were all high on the priority list.

The Solution

We began by creating 3D visualisations to help the clients explore layout options and see how the new space would work with their existing home. This gave them the confidence to move forward, knowing exactly what to expect.

We designed a rear extension that transformed the back of the property, knocking through into the existing kitchen and dining areas to create one generous open-plan space. Large doors and rooflights brought in plenty of natural light, while the addition of a separate utility room kept the main living space clear and clutter-free.

We managed the entire project from planning through to completion, ensuring smooth progress throughout and a finish that reflected the clients’ goals.

The Results

The extension completely redefined how the family used their home. What was once a series of disconnected rooms is now a bright, open, and flexible space perfect for cooking, eating, and relaxing together. The new utility room added everyday practicality, while the improved layout made the house feel bigger, brighter, and better suited to modern living.

The clients were delighted both with the finished result and with how easy the process felt from start to finish.
