Garage conversion creating open-plan entertaining space
Our clients returned to us after having a loft conversion a few years ago and wanted to now make better use of their double garage, which was underutilised and disconnected from the house. Their goal was to create a larger, more inviting space for entertaining family and friends. The existing dining room felt cramped, and the garage’s potential was going to waste. The challenge was to integrate part of the garage into the main house seamlessly while retaining a functional single garage.

The Brief
The clients envisioned a spacious, open-plan entertaining area that would become the heart of their home. They wanted a bright and airy feel, with plenty of natural light and easy access to the garden. The design aimed to create a versatile space for both family gatherings and social occasions, blending comfort with a modern aesthetic while maintaining the practicality of a single garage for storage and parking.
The Solution
To achieve this, half of the double garage was converted and knocked through to the existing dining room, creating a much larger and more cohesive entertaining area. Two new rooflights were installed to flood the space with natural light, while double French doors at the rear and a new window at the front further enhance the bright, fresh feel of the space. The other half of the garage was retained as a single garage, complete with a new door, ensuring the clients could still benefit from secure storage and parking. Thoughtful internal alterations ensured a smooth transition between the old and new spaces, with finishes and materials chosen to complement the existing character of the home.

The Results
The new open-plan space has transformed how the clients use their home. The increased natural light from the rooflights, French doors, and front window has created a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The larger footprint offers ample room for entertaining, and the seamless integration with the existing dining room has improved both the flow and functionality of the ground floor. Retaining a single garage ensures the clients haven’t lost valuable storage or parking space. The result is a beautiful, practical space that meets their needs for both everyday living and special occasions.
